CHAPTER SIX

As they sat in the lobby, Pete fidgeted with a city map. “They’re late. I really want to shower and wash my hair. I hate salty curls. I also still have sand stuck up my ass crack. I hate that sensation even more. I should have rinsed off better at the beach shower but you rushed me to arrive here on time. Now they’re late.” He pouted and shook the map.

“Shh, it’s only six-twenty. I’m sure they’ll arrive soon—I doubt if Death’s information is that off the mark.” Claude examined his sunburned right shoulder and winced. His initial brief swim had been enough to toast him. Even wearing his loose tank top caused discomfort. The damned fire demon must be creating the intensely hot weather. Stupid damned prick.

Pete muttered something Claude didn’t understand and just as well. Claude let him pout.

He glanced back at the lobby desk. The female desk clerk acted the polar opposite of Sergio. She barely acknowledged their existence. When Pete tried asking her about eateries, she shrugged him off like he annoyed her. Something seemed odd about her rude performance.

Voices sounded at the doorway. The door to the B&B opened. He stared with anticipation.

Their mission stepped in, laughing as they held hands. Claude’s mood dropped into the bedrock. How unfair to imagine these two handsome, happy men suffering the wrath of a fire demon.

“I don’t know, Claude, where should we go to eat?” Pete rustled the map and sighed hard enough to dislocate the air conditioning’s cool breeze. “There are too many choices! I wish someone who spoke English could help us elect a great place for our first romantic dinner in Italy.” He aimed a glare at the front desk and lowered his tone. “Unlike that rude bitch.”

Aside from the elect, Pete gave a fine performance. Claude tried not to stare at the two men staring at them.

Mads smiled at them. “Hey, you’re American.”

Pete waved his map. “Yes we are. You must be the other Americans staying here.” Claude watched as Pete adopted his sexy pout. “We’re trying to determine where to have dinner but the desk clerk is rude.”

A violent hiss split the air. “Mads, let’s go to our room.”

Wow, what a super wet cat stuck in a rain barrel imitation! Claude stared at Amando, who shot him a glare containing acid or, wait, he glared heatedly at Claude’s skull brand. What went wrong here? Claude focused on Amando, trying to probe his personality. A weird sensation made his skull tattoo twitch and flex. His fury rose up, urging him to punch Amando hard in his cute little nose. What was he?

“Please, I just want advice.” Pete stood and held out the map.

“Baby, come on, let me talk to these guys.” Mads stepped close and lowered his voice. “I don’t want you to eat at the place Sergio recommended. His brother owns it and the food’s not great. My stomach told me the sorry truth this morning.”

“Mads, please, don’t talk to them.” Amando yanked at Mads’s arm hard enough to stagger him sideways.
